We'd hoped this would have happened months ago which might explain why this old site hasn't seen much in the way of updates for 2017, but after lots of hard work by lots of people we are finally there.

Newsletter 19th August 2016http://gladys.cricket.ie/about/news/Newsletter_19th_August_2016.html2016-08-19T15:49:54Z2016-08-19T12:26:17Z

Hi Everyone,

And now the end is near……

The end is fast approaching and we enter a very busy part of the season. Teams are fighting for top spot, middle spot or even any spot at all.

All our youth teams both boys and girls are finishing their seasons and lots of our players have gone on to representative level with both Leinster and Ireland. Believe me there are too many to mention here. I congratulate everyone on their success and I know you will all be involved in further training and development over the winter.

The most successful team in the club this season are undoubtedly the girls U15 team. They have already won the cup and are playing the league final on Monday at 2pm in Pembroke. They are a blend of U15’s, U11’s and U9’s which is good for next year and win or lose this game they have had a fantastic season. Very well done to them and they would love your support.

I would like to thank all the coaches, managers and parents who have supported and looked after all our youth teams. The Club appreciates all the time you put in. We are the envy of Leinster with the amount of teams we have and their success. That is down to you all. Thank you.

I was delighted recently to be involved with the live streaming of the Irish lady’s games against Sth Africa. Brookettes, Kim, Louise, Shauna and Meg were all on the squads for the T20 and ODI series. As an ex international, I can’t tell you how proud I was to see our team beat Sth Africa in one of the T20’s and one of the ODI’s. This was a momentous achievement in the global woman’s game and will have far reaching implications. All our players were terrific and Kim was one of the three nominations for player of the series. Well done to them. They play Bangladesh next in early September in Bready CC. Check out the Cricket Ireland web site for info.

Barry McCarthy continues to impress with both Durum and Ireland. Just yesterday he took 4/64 for Ireland against Pakistan. Fantastic bowling. He will play them again tomorrow in Malahide and we wish him and Ireland well.

The Ladies teams are also finishing their competitions. With all three teams expected to finish second in their respective leagues. Well done to all. These teams are a mixture of youth and experience which bodes very well for the future of the club. They are also very fortunate to be coached by Miriam and managed by Amanda, so the captains have just had to concentrate on matters on the pitch. Thanks to all involved with the lady’s section of the club, it is vibrant and thriving.

The men’s teams have had mixed success. We are extremely proud of our firsts who we expect to finish second in the league. What a fantastic season they have had and it has come down to the one game against Tarf which we unfortunately lost. Well done to Conor, Paul and the boys on a terrific run.

The 2nds and 3rds teams are expected to finish mid table with the 4ths and 5ths slightly lower then mid. These teams are also a mixture of youths and slightly older than that and I sincerely hope that they have enjoyed their season. I know that the captains have sometimes struggled with numbers and I thank them for their perseverance. I have particularly enjoyed watching double headers in the club and admired the total commitment from all the players. Well done everyone. We unfortunately had to withdraw our 6ths from the league, which was very disappointing for the club.

I am aware that the LCU are trying to address the “spirit of cricket” issues in the lower men’s leagues and I have to comment that they unfortunately have some way to go yet.

Off the pitch the club is hopping with events most Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. This has left Saturday and Sunday nights generally free for the members. I have enjoyed very pleasant weekend evenings with everyone watching sport and listening to the cricket chat. I am disappointed that a couple of fundraising events that were planned didn’t happen, but that’s the way it goes.

This is my last newsletter as I hand over the Presidency of this fantastic club to Sean on the 31st August. I want to sincerely thank my Exec Committee for all their support, commitment and hard work over the last three years. It is intensely challenging running a club such as ours, as you have to try to achieve a balance between the club and its members, who are like your family, and making sure the club remains solvent. I totally appreciate all the work you have done along with your ‘day jobs’ and I feel we have achieved a lot, both for the cricket end and the development of the facilities

I would finally like to thank all of the members for your support over the last three years. I am honoured and enormously proud to have been the President of Pembroke Cricket Club.

See you in the club at the weekend.

Picnic Tea in College Parkhttp://gladys.cricket.ie/about/news/Picnic_Tea_in_College_Park.html2016-06-23T16:18:46Z2016-06-23T13:12:51Z

Last weekend was one that seemed to have everything. The weather washed out any ideas of play on Sunday and saw the Firsts (at YMCA), Thirds (at Leinster C.C.) and Fifths (at home to Merrion) all called off leaving players to decide whether to admit to their other half that their game was off or take to a bar to watch another day of international sport.

Saturday had seen the Sixth team of 10 take on the students of Dublin University in the Minor Cup. Despite losing the toss Pembroke were happy enough to bat first. However a series of collapses and plenty of low scores saw the side struggle to 74. Thomas Musgrave put up some resistance and was rewarded with a 20 run partnership that meant the team did have something to bowl at. Extras also contributed well with 21 meaning the 10 bats had accumulated just 53 runs between them.

Pembroke did not defend 74, but of note Thomas Musgrave took his first two wickets in adult cricket and will remember the day with fondness for years to come. Akil Joseph also recorded his first wicket as Dublin University went on to pass our score.

Tea was taken outside as a student picnic before various members of both teams rejoined to the bar to watch Ireland playing rugby in Pretoria. That should give you some idea of how long the game lasted.

DUCC now progress to the quarter-finals with our best wishes as this had been a game played within the spirit of the game and without rancour and of course in the best setting for cricket.

The Fourths game at home to Dundrum however came from the other side of the tracks. As a game it was nasty, ill-tempered, and downright unpleasant. I have written more on this and the entire cheating situation within Leinster cricket and that article is available on cricketleinster.ie/news

So that is the cricket played. I have no idea of any midweek results for the Women or the Men or even the youth.

Scheduled games this weekend have been affected by the visit of VP Joe Biden. Despite his travelling to the West and to County Louth in search of his Irish heritage, the Office of Public Works have decreed that no team sports will take place in the Phoenix Park during his visit. The Zoological Gardens remain open, but team sports must rank high as a security risk. Thus the Sixes have yet another game cancelled, this time through no fault of their own and the Thirds also fall foul of the VP’s security precautions as they had been due to visit Phoenix.

This leaves the First XI game versus Phoenix, luckily arranged for Sydney Parade as the only game on Saturday meaning that if the weather cooperates there could be a sizable crowd as they try to hold onto first place in Division 1.

Sunday sees two games scheduled with the Seconds, minus their captain Bill who still have his arm in a sling, due to welcome Malahide 2’s, whilst the 6’s were due to travel to Adamstown. At this stage of the week, it is unknown if a team can be put together for this trip.

Tuesday could the busiest day for cricket with Merrion providing opposition to both the Seconds (T20 in Anglesea Road) and the Women’s Seconds (in Sydney Parade).

Weekend of Weatherhttp://gladys.cricket.ie/about/news/Weekend_of_Weather.html2016-06-14T07:23:53Z2016-06-14T07:23:53Z

Well, that was a nice albeit short summer wasn’t it. Normal service was resumed this weekend with the weather playing the leading role and cricket being a mere supporting actor.

Saturday saw the Thirds welcoming Merrion to Sydney Parade and both teams watching rain fall in varying degrees. Fine mists and heavy downpours were the two extremes but there are many degrees within those and most were seen on Saturday.

The same weather was experienced by the 5th team as they huddled under the shelter of the Terenure Titans clubhouse watching torrents of rain falling. Once poddles (well it was raining cats and dogs!!) started appearing on the outfield it was obvious that no further play was going to be possible and both sets of players headed back to reality.

The Firsts also fell to the weather, although this was more due to Duckworth Lewis and thus exited the Leinster Senior Cup. Having recently beaten Clontarf in Castle Avenue in the league hopes will have been high that there could have been a repeat, but it wasn’t to be. Charles Wakim’s 83 probably made the difference.

This now means that the 6’s are the only side in the club who remain in a cup, although this is due to scheduling rather than anything else. As our 6’s have only put out one team this season, one hopes they will find 11 for this Saturday’s clash in College Park.

Of course Saturday wasn’t the worst day for rain to fall as the alternatives on television were wide and varied. Cricket from Lords was also rained off but Sky showed a master-class from Shane Warne on the art of leg-spin. The European Championships for round ball enthusiasts continue with as many battles off the field as on it. Seeing the wide differences between the Russian and English fans and our own Green Army on social media makes you very proud of our supporters in France. Will UEFA ever follow through on a threat of expulsion? Will the alcohol ban near grounds stop the Irish in their search for fun? In addition the oval ball fans were well pleased on Saturday. Firstly the Baby Greens (which sounds like something your mother put on your plate when you were 6) beat the Baby Blacks at the U20 World Championship currently being held in Manchester. It was a magnificent performance from the Irish and one which deserved to topple the tournament favourites. The Baby Greens have now beaten the European Grand Slam winners and the current World Champions. However a bigger shock was to come with the full Irish side taking on the Springboks in their own back yard. A difficult task made so very much trickier when CJ Stander got sent off for reckless play. Opinions were divided in the Ganly Room on the balance between punishment and crime, but united in the belief that Ireland would not overcome a handicap of playing with 14 for 50 minutes and 13 for 10. However, what an accomplishment, not only beating the South Africans under such conditions but doing so in a way that made you wonder which team was a man short.

Six o’clock saw the start of qualification for the Canadialand Grand Prix and the sight of car after car being driven like it was on the N7 at 4 o’clock on a Friday night. It is a more specialist sport, but I like it, so there!

So there was plenty to do even if it wasn’t on the field of play on Saturday.

Sunday saw only one game with the Fifths welcoming Clondalkin back to Sydney Parade after last week’s league game. Playing on pitch 12 the players got to experience very large boundaries and neutral umpires. Add to this Emma kept the book, for one day we felt like first team players. Sadly we didn’t play like first team players. Bowling first we restricted Clondalkin to 137 which we would have taken if offered beforehand. However falling to 9/4 put us behind the black ball. Conor and Joe Prendergast did bring us back to the game, but their efforts weren’t quite enough as we fell 19 runs short. Another cup run cut short.

This week the 6’s game in the Russell Court Trophy has already been conceded, although the bar will be open for the Ireland v Sweden football match at 5.

Tuesday sees the Seconds in T20 mode in the Tillian Cup where they take on Merrion.

Thursday also sees Merrion visiting but this time it is the Women’s Firsts who will be playing in a Division 1 fixture. Merrion are one of two unbeaten teams and Shauna and the women will be keen to lower their colours.

Next Friday the Women’s Third team will be opening the weekend’s fixtures as they take on Clontarf. They would, of course, welcome any and all support even with a corporate BBQ in situ. The First team will also be in action in an Alan Murray group game against, yes, Merrion in Anglesea Road.

The weekend will see the 1st’s, 3rds, 4ths and even the 6’s putting out full and complete teams.

Tie of the weekend and the game that will attract the most spectators will be the 6th team as they have their Minor Cup game on Saturday against the students of Dublin University in College Park. If the 6’s can’t find 11 players for this one, there can be no hope for this side for the rest of the season. Also on Saturday, Stephen Willis’ 4ths will welcome the currently homeless Dundrum to Sydney Parade.

Sunday the First team will be travelling, but not too far, to Claremont Road to take on YMCA. Victory will keep the team top of the Division 1 table but things are so tight at the moment with 4 points covering five teams. Stephen Moore is away in Poland celebrating his second wedding anniversary with Emma and so The Bash will be leading from the front as Merrion come a visiting. Finally David O’Riordan will be heading over to Observatory Lane to take on Leinster C.C.

Finally if you get a chance, take a listen to last week’s The Slog Sweep in which not only does President Janice speak on Leinster and Irish Womens’ cricket, but this week Sean Smith, Director of Cricket, spoke about Pembroke in Club Corner. Worth a download and listen.

The club bar will be open today for the Ireland V Sweden football game and for All the Ireland games.

Come on down to the club and support our boys in green.

Bring your inflatable hammer.

See you there.

Busy But Not Hectic Weekendhttp://gladys.cricket.ie/about/news/Busy_But_Not_Hectic_Weekend.html2016-06-08T11:30:19Z2016-06-08T07:15:15Z

Four games of cricket and one social function for Pembroke in the three days of the Bank Holiday weekend. It was a busy without being hectic sort of weekend.

Saturday saw the First XI maintain their slender lead at the top of Division 1 with a fine victory over local rivals Merrion. Daniel Solway led from the front with a magnificent unbeaten 153 with Conor Mullen also scoring well with 62. Daniel’s knock was over 134 balls with 17 fours and one maximum. Daniel and Theo Lawson had an opening stand of 125, whilst together Daniel and Conor put on 114. A final total of 298/5 proved to be enough for the win and 2 bonus points as Merrion failed to reach 250 in reply.

Pembroke are now top of the table, but it is a close run thing with four clubs all within 4 points of our lads. However, having now beaten Clontarf (who we will meet again in the Leinster Senior Cup) North County and now Merrion things are looking positive. It may have been mentioned last week, but this is the first time in a dozen years that Pembroke has stood at the top of the Leinster leagues.

In addition, Fiachra Tucker has been presented with a Cathaoirleach’s Sports Award for cricket. It was presented by Barry Saul of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council. Mum and dad were present at the award and probably proud as punch.

Also on Saturday, Stephen Moore took his side to Bird Avenue to play Merrion Sixth XI. Sadly another defeat followed as Merrion won by more than 100 runs.

Saturday night the Women hosted the Club at the Summer Extravaganza and a mighty fine job they did too. An excellent meal was followed by music provided live and with a DJ. Well done to the Women for such an enjoyable and inclusive Club night. Hopefully it will be the first of many such events.

Whilst on the subject of the Women, many congratulations to Louise McCarthy, Shauna Kavanagh and Kim Garth (captaining) who are currently away with the Ireland A team to play ECB Academy in Loughborough University.

Sunday was a day of rest for most, but Stephen Willis and his Fourth XI had their first round cup game against Adamstown. Stephen had attended on Saturday night to ensure his team all had early nights and were not overly tempted by the delights on offer in the Club. He took this role very seriously and stayed quite late to make sure that no one snuck in.

However, it seems that some may have turned up not entirely awake as Adamstown shot off to 65 for 0 off the first six overs. Such a start made it hard to catch up for the Fourths and they ended up losing. Sugata Gupta demonstrated that class remains permanent and that form will return with a fabulous half century despite ending up injured and using a runner. The Cup will have to wait another year for Stephen and his men.

Monday the Fifths took centre stage on a grass wicket on the main square. Clondalkin provided the opposition. Lunchtime thunderstorms ensured the game would not start on time and the game was reduced to 30 overs per side. Bowling first Pembroke bowled out Clondalkin for 118. The wickets were shared around although David Cosgrave managed to take two wickets and keep wicket; a true all-rounder.

In reply Pembroke looks shaky as would be expected from a team which had not won yet this season. However Conor Prendergast and Niall Walsh decided to stay and finish things off and the target achieved with and over and a half to spare.

The game was not played in a pleasant manner with both teams, when fielding, asking for a change of umpire and on-going debates ensuing about Laws, regulations and spirit of the game. If neutral umpires are not assigned to the game next weekend, which is a first round cup game, then things could get very heated very quickly.

However, the Fifths have finally recorded their first win of 2016 and will be hoping to find 11 players for tomorrow’s T20 as well as a league game on Saturday and this cup game on the Sunday.

Sadly the 6’s are still struggling for players and this struggle is now starting to affect the fifth team also. Please if you are available for games, do let Sean Smith know.

Finally here are this week’s fixtures.

Pembroke U11 Girls vs Malahide A, league Game 1, Sunday 22nd May 2016 (away)

The Under 11 Girls kicked off their league campaign away to Malahide’s A Team on Sunday 22nd May. Malahide won the toss and elected to field first.

Joint Captain, Lainey Martin, & Annalinh McDonald opened for PCC with Annalinh hitting 16 including two 4’s. Kimli McDonald and Caoimhe Moore continued the strong batting performance with Kimli hitting two 4’s in a wonderful total of 19 runs and Caoimhe protecting her wicket for no loss. Isabel Corbett and Ondine Travers continued the good work with 25 runs between them for no loss of wicket, and Ondine hit a 4 in her first cricket match. Molly McKay and Anna Harold finished Pembroke’s batting against a strong bowling combination with Molly hitting a 4.

Pembroke’s total of 89 for 4 wickets seemed to be a winning target but Malahide had several strong batgirls and they chased the total aggressively. Amazingly the match came down to the very last ball where a no ball or wide would have lost the match. Malahide squeezed a single run to draw with an exact 89 runs for 4 wickets. All the girls bowled with Lainey, Anna, Kimli, and Molly taking wickets.

Special mention for ‘Assistant Manager’ of the day, Laragh Heneghan, who despite carrying an injury substituted in for an on-field injury during fielding and was on the field to the end of the match.

Well done to the Girls! A great start to the league.

The Week That Washttp://gladys.cricket.ie/about/news/The_Week_That_Was.html2016-05-31T07:25:15Z2016-05-31T07:25:15Z

As the sun shines and the state school examination period begins, cricket fixtures are coming hard and fast. It is a busy time for everyone, players, administrators, grounds-men and everyone linked with cricket, especially Pembroke cricket. Due to changes in starring regulations, examinations, holidays and a number of players unable or unwilling to take to the field of play, there are difficulties in fielding some teams and some teams are taking to play with under-strength teams. We, as a Club, need to encourage players out onto the pitch at all levels.

It was great to see another Pembroke youth making his senior debut at the weekend. Ethan Clarke appeared for the Sixth XI in their league game versus Adamstown alongside such Pembroke legends as Ed Dwyer, Brian Bannigan and Kevin Ryan. It could be the start of a long Pembroke career!

Sean Smith has the unenviable task of arranging the Open Competition starring list for Pembroke and has to field all of the queries and fill all of the gaps. If you are available to play, do let Sean know and he will get you onto a pitch very quickly.

Nets should be busy now with Daniel Solway offering his wisdom, especially on Wednesday nights. So whilst the sun shines, get yourself down to nets and improve your game. Daniel is setting standards in his performances for the First XI and you would be wise to take the chance to learn from a class batsman.

Last Monday the Thirds fell to Sandyford in a YM Salver T20 cup game. Sadly the Sixes game versus AIB in the Russell Court Trophy was called off as a team couldn’t be fielded.

Tuesday the First XI lost to Merrion Firsts in an Alan Murray T20 group game. It would be unlikely that they would now qualify from their group for the knock-out stages.

Wednesday’s Women’s Third XI game versus Leinster was another game cancelled and one hopes that once the examinations are done and the school holidays begin that playing numbers will improve.

Thursday saw the Women’s First XI trounce Ciara Metcalfe’s new team, The Hills. Bowling first Pembroke knocked The Hills over for a paltry 15 runs: 8 from the bat, 6 wides and 1 leg bye. It didn’t make for a classic game, but it did mean I could balance the book easily enough. The Hills were unfortunate in coming up against a rampant Kim Garth who took 4 for 4 and was ably supported by Louise McCarthy who took 2 for 5. Skipper Shauna Kavanagh sent Orla Prendergast and Cliona Tucker out to open and knock off the required runs without loss.

Friday night saw the Women’s Second XI take on Malahide in the Junior Cup in Sydney Parade, a repeat of last year’s final. Captain Cathy Murphy again led from the front, ably supported by Emer Ryan, as Pembroke chased down their target. Cathy even called a run short on herself when the umpire missed it. The women played exceptionally well with Hannah Little excelling with the ball and was part of a bowling attack that saw Barbara Musgrave take 4/11. The Women now progress to the semi-finals of the Junior Cup.

Saturday saw the Firsts go to Castle Avenue and triumph over Clontarf to hit the top of Division 1. This is the first time in 12 years that Pembroke have sat upon the summit of Leinster league cricket and now the hard work starts as they try to remain there.

Saturday also saw the Thirds, at home, falling to Leinster in a Division 5 game, whilst Sunday saw four team defeats.

The Seconds couldn’t repeat the victory of the Firsts the day before in Castle Avenue and exited the Senior 2 Cup with Clontarf Seconds advancing to the next round.

In Shaw’s Bridge, our First XI were superbly hosted by Instonians in the second round of the Bob Kerr Irish Senior Cup. After overnight rain the wicket was a little slow to begin with but improved throughout the day. We lost the toss and unsurprisingly were put into bat. Despite Daniel’s efforts in compiling 91 the total crept rather than rushed up. The lower order did well with Ben Hoey getting a quick 30 odd, Captain Paul Lawson added 20 odd and the total was dragged up to 246/9 from 50 overs. However with the improvement in the wicket the Instonians batmen went about their business without distraction and although Pembroke did manage to take a few wickets, the target was reached. If Pembroke had batted second I feel they could have chased down any total Instonians could have posted. On such small things do games depend.

In Sydney Parade both the Fourths and the Sixes both failed to record a win. The Fourths lost to Bagenalstown and the Sixes lost to Adamstown. The real triumph for the Sixes was getting a team out at all. Kevin Ryan and Conor Prendergast both scored 37 with Conrad Jones reaching 39 as the Sixes made 198 in their 40 overs. Despite Louise McCarthy taking a wicket in her first over, Adamstown only took 19 overs to chase down their target.

Still it could all have been worse. Playing in the National Cup, Rush’s Stephen Doheny scored 259 as Rush racked up 569 in 50 overs. Now that is a lot of chasing leather, or rather looking for leather. Stephen’s innings fell one short of the Irish Senior Cup individual score record of 260 by Decker Curry, but did top Robin Kelly’s 219 in Rush a few years ago.

This week looks like another busy one with hopefully everyone keen to make the most of the sunshine and heat that seems to be with us for the foreseeable future.

Tuesday evening sees the Second XI heading out to North County for a 6pm start and another Tillian group game, whilst the Women’s Seconds will be out in Clontarf in a Division 2 game.

Wednesday sees more evening cricket with Stephen Moore taking his 5th XI to Marley Park to take on Sandyford in a Whelan Cup game, whilst the Women’s Thirds are scheduled to welcome Phoenix to Sydney Parade in a league game.

Thursday Shauna and the Women’s First XI go to Malahide to take on Mary Waldron and the rest of the Village.

No games on Friday means that we should all head into the Bank Holiday weekend refreshed and ready for a full weekend. Four teams are scheduled to be in action this weekend. The First XI will host Merrion as they attempt to remain at the top of Division 1 and gain a measure of revenge for defeat in the Alan Murray to the same team.

The Fifth XI will be heading off to the delights of Bird Avenue to take on Merrion 6’s. The newish clubhouse is a vast improvement on the previous incarnation, and one hopes that Merrion will bring the tea this year, unlike last season when the Pembroke team had to travel to Anglesea Road to collect the tea. Personally I will not be playing here as I am heading off with great delight to Headfort School to make my debut for the Leprechauns against a touring side from New Zealand.

Saturday night then sees the first major Club social function with the Women hosting a summer extravaganza. If you have not as yet got your tickets then speak to Louise McCarthy and make sure you support the function and support your Club, especially at the bar.

Sunday, Stephen Willis will be hoping that not too many of his team have enjoyed Saturday’s function too much and that they are bright eyes and bushy tailed for their Middle 2 Cup game versus Adamstown.

The Bank Holiday will see the Fifths playing at home in their second game of the weekend, third game of the week and as part of the six games in 12 days run that they have facing them. Sunday’s game is a Division 11 return fixture against Clondalkin. Clondalkin are newcomers to the league as a club, although most of their members have come from other existing teams and beat the Fifths earlier in the month on their patch in Tymon Park. Pembroke will be keen to overturn that result at home.

Now, let the sunshine warm your bones, the cricket warm your heart and the bar, well, let the bar do what it does best.

EURO 2016 LAST MAN STANDING COMPhttp://gladys.cricket.ie/about/news/EURO_2016_LAST_MAN_STANDING_COMP.html2016-05-25T09:01:00Z2016-05-25T09:01:00Z

Last Man Standing Rules

Players pay their entry fee before the competition starts, and don’t need to pay again. Some of the fee goes to support the club or charity running the competition, and the rest goes into the pot to be won.

Each week, players simply pick a team playing a match that week – if their team wins, they go through; lose or draw and they’re out.

A player can only pick a team to win once in a competition, so they should be tactical about who they pick and when.

All selections must be in before kick off of the first match of the week — they can be changed up to this deadline.

Rounds of fixtures may take place on weekends or mid-week.

If a team’s game is postponed, players who chose them are automatically put through to the next round.

If players forget to pick a team before each round’s deadline, we’ll randomly pick one for them for that round.

The Last Man Standing continues until only one person remains and wins the pot. If two participants remain at the end, the pot is equally distributed; however, if more than two remain everyone goes through to the next round. If all remaining players lose their match in a round together, they all go through to the next round.

Week Reporthttp://gladys.cricket.ie/about/news/Week_Report.html2016-05-23T13:08:48Z2016-05-23T13:08:48Z

Week Report

The past week saw the first two individual centuries for Pembroke. First to break three figures was Meg Kendal who reached her century in a 20 over game verses North Kildare as the Women’s Firsts took their Division 1 record to 2 and 1. Then on Saturday in the Leinster Senior Cup, Daniel Solway scored an unbeaten 118 as the First team brushed aside the challenge of Division 2 side Balbriggan. Congratulations to both players.

Last Tuesday Cathy Murphy led from the front scoring 46* as the Women’s Seconds beat Phoenix by 8 wickets. Wednesday unfortunately saw the Women’s Thirds fall to ex-member Priscilla Pegman and the rest of the Greystones team.

On Thursday the Men’s First team travelled to North County for an Alan Murray T20 group game. North County took revenge for their recent defeat at Sydney Parade in the league. Thursday also saw Meg’s century as the Women’s Firsts put away North Kildare to remain in the title race.

On Saturday the Firsts took on the weather as well as a John Mooney-less Balbriggan in the 60 over Leinster Senior Cup. Balbriggan looked well poised to set a challenging total when they were about 200 for 5 with 10 overs remaining. However a late order collapse saw them pegged back to 222. Pembroke opened with Daniel Solway and Theo Lawson and a steady start ensued. Daniel took his opportunity to accumulate runs with great delight. His three successive cover drives, plus his dispatching of full tosses were a delight to watch. This was an innings that was worth enduring the drizzle to watch. Daniel guided Pembroke to the desired total with overs to spare and we now go into the draw for the second round on Tuesday.

Sadly at the other end of the men’s teams the 6th XI were again unable to field a team and could not travel to Knockharley on Saturday. The 6’s have been decimated with players on higher teams, not yet appearing from their winter hibernation, having to be replaced on the starring list and with the usual early season problems such as school or national exams. If you are available to play cricket this season and have not yet done so, please contact Sean Smith or turn up to nets and get out there.

Sunday saw a double header in Sydney Parade as the Fifths welcomed Lucan to the main square and R&SPU brought their fourths and Adamstown to the Junior mat. Both games eventually fell to the weather, with torrential rain seeing puddles appearing on the square and even the “Jack puddle” made a re-appearance. The Fifths had been due to play on a grass wicket, but pre-game rain saw a move to the mat in an effort to get a full game in. The captains agreed on a reduction in overs due to the late start and Pembroke batted first. A total of 158 owed as much to Extras as any one batsman, but did look like being a winning score when the rain caused abandonment. Sean Smith took four wickets opening the bowling, but ran out of overs in search of his fivefer. Railway and Adamstown did try to complete their game, but even the junior mat fell victim to the sheer volume of water that fell.

This week should see plenty of action on the pitch as the Irish summer finally arrives. Now if that is not being optimistic I don’t know what is. Of course it is nearly Leaving & Junior Cert exam time and the sun always seems to come out for that. Tonight the Third XI welcomes Sandyford to Sydney Parade for a YM Salver game. A 6pm start and clear skies should see this game completed. The 6’s were due to play AIB in Park Ave, but have been unable to field a team.

Tuesday sees the First team take on Merrion in their second Alan Murray T20 group game. This is a must-win game if Pembroke are to come out of the group.

Wednesday sees the first of three nights of Women’s cricket in Sydney Parade as the Thirds welcome Leinster CC for a Division 3 game.

Thursday sees the Division 1 clash between Pembroke and Ciara Metcalfe’s The Hills.

Friday then sees Cathy Murphy’s Second team play their first Junior Cup game versus Malahide.

The weekend looks, on the schedule, like a busy one. The Thirds play at home versus Leinster in a Division 5 match, whilst the First XI faces a serious test in Castle Avenue against Clontarf. Sunday sees the Seconds head out to Castle Avenue in a Division 3 game against Clontarf’s Seconds, whilst the proposed double header with the Fourths playing Bagenalstown on the main square could be under risk as the 6’s will need to find some players to entertain Adamstown on the junior mat.

Highlight of the weekend is liable to be the Bob Kerr All-Ireland Cup game up North as the Firsts travel to Instonians in what will be a tough game to negotiate.

Best of luck to all the teams making it out onto the paddock and here’s hoping we have more centuries to report on next week.

What A Weekend!http://gladys.cricket.ie/about/news/What_A_Weekend__33__.html2016-05-17T11:30:43Z2016-05-16T10:28:10Z

Well what a weekend that was. Australia nearly triumphed in the Eurovision, the sun burst through and there was some amazing cricket played.

On Saturday the Firsts welcomed North County to Sydney Parade in their second Division 1 game. Having fallen to The Hills in round 1, it was imperative that the team kick started their league campaign. Scheduling meant that the four teams that had won their first game were playing the four teams that lost.

Batting first, Theo and Daniel played themselves in and put on around 90 before a flurry of wickets saw them 120 odd for 4. They managed to post 196 and a close finish was on the cards. However Paul Lawson put paid to that idea knocking over the North County top order and regular wickets meant that Pembroke triumphed by 90 odd runs and took all 25 points on offer. Jack Balbirnie bowled slower and slower as the batsmen demonstrated their difficulties in remaining at the crease at the end of the innings. Other results means that Pembroke are now fourth in Division 1 with the top two teams undefeated and the bottom two teams winless. It is shaping up to be a tight league with everyone still in the hunt for the title, but also everyone fearing relegation. The game was won well inside the regulation 100 overs, but the crowd remained basking in the sun and awaiting Eurovision.

Sunday saw the first of the season’s double headers with Stephen Willis leading the Fourths into battle against Wexford Wanderers and Conor Prendergast leading the Sixes into their opening fixture after two previous games were deferred. These games were scheduled to last 170 overs combined. It didn’t quite work out that way.

On the junior mat Pembroke batted first and quickly. Despite the return of Ed “The Luge” Dwyer to the playing fields after a three year sabbatical, the Sixes found themselves victims due to the removal of a number of players from the higher teams on the starring lists during the week, and were very much under-strength. It was an impossibly tough game for Conor to make his captaincy debut, not made any easier by the Balbriggan opening bowler taking a very cheap ‘fivefer’ including a hat-trick from the Leinster Under 15 bowler, that included Ed, Nigel Poff and the skipper himself. Youth on the side was represented by Thomas Musgrave, Noah Smith and Donnacha Tucker, whilst Becca Gallagher was the only Lady on the team. Ed did top score with two fours and Max McNamara got to watch the hat-trick from the other end and in total the team struggled to 36 all out. Balbriggan then knocked off the runs in 3.2 overs to take victory in an hour and a half. Quote of the day came from Max who said, “If you have me opening the batting and the bowling, you know you’re in trouble”.

On the main square, Stephen Willis’ Fourth XI fielded first versus Wexford and Ben Crowley was the chief destroyer as he knocked over the top order taking four quick wickets, before returning to claim his fifth wicket in his second spell. Wexford managed to reach a total of 81, which was never going to be enough.

Shovan and the Skipper opened the innings and saw off the opening bowlers before Stephen fell and Joe Prendergast strode to the middle. These two took Pembroke to
the brink of victory before Shovan contrived to get himself dismissed run out in a fashion that only Shovan can. Joe and one of the Wexford bowlers got themselves into a couple of heated discussions that saw the umpires, P. Searson and V. Gee get involved under the watchful eye of their assessor, Kevin Gallagher and will probably see Joe and Stephen attending a mid-week meeting with the authorities. Joe then hit the winning runs and secured a fine win for Stephen.

The Sixes game was over before drinks and the Fourths game was finished before tea leaving a good crowd to enjoy just the sunshine and the occasional reports from Old Trafford about suspicious items. It was suggested that it could be a trophy at Old Trafford, which would have been very suspicious.

The Seconds travelled to Observatory Lane to play Leinster in Division 3. Leinster batted first and compiled 219/5 from their full allocation of overs. Pembroke fell to 180 all out and therefore lost by 40 runs.

Last week the Women’s Second team had travelled to Malahide to open their season and to see Sharon Gray make her final, for now anyway, appearance before she moved to the UK. She made a fine 28 and young Hannah Little took 1/18, but the team failed to win and will now miss Sharon. Sharon will also be missed elsewhere in the Club, having given so much of her time to us. She not only played, but also scored for the First XI, looked after the technological scoring for Mark Leonard and scored many Women’s games. Sharon is the sort of member every Club needs and we have been fortunate she chose Pembroke. We wish her all the very best going forward and Sharon is always welcome back in Sydney Parade.

Thursday saw the Women’s First team record a win versus Leinster in a game that went down to the last ball. In a similar fashion to the Men’s First team, the Women needed to win their second game having comprehensively fallen to YMCA in the first game of the season. No scorecard has been posted on the cricketleinster website at this time.

The pace of games really picks up now with 20 games to be played before the end of May. This week sees the Women’s teams playing Tuesday (Seconds v Phoenix), Wednesday (Thirds v Greystones) and Thursday (Firsts v North Kildare). Thursday also sees the Men’s First XI heading out to North County for the first Alan Murray T20 group game and then on Saturday they are due to host Balbriggan in the 60 over Leinster Senior Cup First Round. The Sixes will be hoping to head out to Knockharley for their Division 14 game on Saturday, whilst the Fifths will be hosting Lucan in Division 11 on Sunday.

The weather forecast is patchy at best for this week with a return to the scattered showers and cloudy weather more usual at this time of year.

Match Newshttp://gladys.cricket.ie/cricket/women/3s/news/Match_News.html2016-05-09T14:14:00Z2016-05-09T14:14:00Z

The Women’s Third team this week consisted of 10 players as they took on Leinster in the first round of the Minor Cup. However the 10 of Pembroke could not repeat the league win of the magnificent seven in College Park as they lacked the fourth bowler and this cost too many runs.

Nicky Bell returned to the playing fields of Sydney Parade and rolled back the years with her athletic fielding and strong batting. It has been a while since Nicky played as evidenced by her turning up in the traditional whites rather than the pj’s that are now worn. Welcome back Nicky.

1sts V YMCAhttp://gladys.cricket.ie/cricket/women/1s/news/1sts_V_YMCA.html2016-05-09T14:11:39Z2016-05-09T14:11:39Z

The Women’s First played their first league game of the season in Claremont Road against YMCA. Pembroke batted first, but regularly lost wickets and did not put up a score large enough to prevent defeat. Claire Shillington scored a half century to demonstrate her undoubted class and lead YMCA to a 9 wicket win.

They take on Leinster at home on Thursday 12th May
